ADHD Policy FAQ

  • What is your Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Policy?

Patients already diagnosed with ADHD who are seeking treatment must provide the clinic with confirmation of their diagnosis either from neuropsychological testing or from their previous providers. If proof of diagnosis is unavailable, the patient must undergo ADHD evaluation and testing within the clinic.

  • What does an ADHD evaluation and testing look like?

ADHD testing has two parts for adults.

Part 1: The diagnostic interview consists of, at minimum, an entire 90-minute intake ($450) plus at least one 45-minute follow-up ($350). The purpose of this is to gather as much information as possible to make sure that the diagnosis of ADHD is accurate and correct. The physician may require additional 25-minute follow-up appointments ($250) at their discretion to ensure the diagnosis is proper. The physician will let you know if and why they need other follow-ups as you progress. You are welcome and encouraged to ask any questions throughout the process.

Part 2: All patients must undergo our online computerized neuropsychological tests ($300), which will take around 30 minutes or so and can be done remotely on your personal computer at your leisure in the comfort of your home.

***Treatment will not begin until your diagnostic evaluation is complete***

  • What if I need an ADHD diagnosis for treatment at another clinic?

Whether you are getting treated with us or treated elsewhere, we are here to help! The process remains the same. However, let the physician know you require this evaluation for another clinic, and at the end of the assessment, the physician will provide you with a letter explaining your diagnosis.

  • What if I want ADHD testing done for a child?

Dr. Henderson, along with being an adult psychiatrist, also has significant training in child and adolescent psychiatry. If you feel your child may have ADHD, we encourage you to get them tested.
The process is mostly the same as above (Part 1 & Part 2); however, the interview time will be shared with the child and the child’s parent/legal guardian. Because children are more complicated, the process may require more than the minimum two appointments prescribed above. Finally, we need additional evaluative paperwork from the patient’s parent/legal guardian and their school performance.

  • What if I start the ADHD evaluation process but realize I no longer want to participate in the diagnostic process?

You are responsible for doing what is suitable for you. If you wish to discontinue at any time, you are welcome to do so. Please be aware you will only receive an ADHD diagnosis if you complete Part 1 & Part 2 as prescribed above. You will also remain responsible for paying for any part of the evaluation you have already completed.

  • I did the ADHD evaluation, but it turns out I don't have ADHD. Do you provide refunds or discounts in this case?

Agreement to be evaluated and tested for ADHD is no guarantee that you have ADHD. Although you are paying to be assessed and tested for ADHD, the physician is not solely evaluating you to give you an ADHD diagnosis but to provide you with answers to why you are feeling the way you are. Many people experience ADHD-like symptoms but suffer from other mental health or physical conditions. Regardless of what your diagnosis is, your physician is committed to doing a thorough evaluation to give you the correct answers the first time whether or not it’s ADHD.

  • I've been diagnosed with ADHD. Now what?

We are glad you are here. We are ready to get you feeling better. ADHD treatment is usually treated with a class of medication called “stimulants,” which are FDA-approved and considered first-line therapy. Of course, your treatment plan will be tailored to your needs by your physician.

  • Special Note on Stimulants

Stimulants are considered a Controlled Susbstance or Scheduled 2 medication by the federal government. Although we serve MD, VA, DC, NY, and CT for medication management and psychotherapy, under the Federal Ryan Haight Act, those patients requiring DEA Controlled Substances/Federally Scheduled Medications via telemedicine (online appointments) must be located in the legal, geographical boundaries of New York State and willing to legally attest to being in NYS at the time of their appointments.

Additionally, as per DEA guidelines, under The Ryan Haight Act, all patients receiving DEA Controlled Substances/Federally Scheduled Medications must be seen in person at least once before resuming online telemedicine appointments.

The DEA has currently waived the in-person and state-binding requirements until December 2024. We will keep you all updated as we get new developments.

  • Special Note on Insurance

We are currently In-Network with AETNA, CIGNA, and BCBS. As such, all testing will be billed through their insurance for participating members.

For ADULTS seeking a diagnosis, please be aware that many insurances will not cover testing for adults, as ADHD is primarily a diagnosis of childhood. All patients are responsible for paying for all parts of their testing regardless of insurance coverage. Please refer to your particular insurance plan to find out what is covered.

*** ATTENTION BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD MEMBERS: Online ADHD Testing is currently NOT COVERED by BCBS at our clinic. If you wish to be still tested, you WILL BE responsible for the out-of-pocket price of $300 without an option for reimbursement. Testing is MANDATORY for all adult patients wishing to get a new full evaluation for ADHD. BCBS members who wish to get tested through their insurance are encouraged to seek neuropsychological or psychological testing elsewhere to get a diagnosis before their first appointment.***
